Learning to drive in Peterborough

Peterborough has got it all when it comes to giving learners variety on the road. Our top-rated instructors will introduce you to a mixture of residential streets, dual carriageways and complex roundabouts, so that you feel confident driving all around the city once you’ve got that pass certificate!

It can be tricky to know where to practise here, but don’t worry. Our learner app will track your routes during lessons, so that you can head back to your favourite practice spots in between. Until then, you’ll want to start out on wide, quiet roads, such as Park Crescent. However, this one goes right past Peterborough Regional College and the university centre, so we’d avoid using it during the school rush!

When you get a bit more confident, you could stay in the same area and try All Saints Road. This narrow street has cars parked on both sides, making it handy for getting used to the rules of giving way on the road. It’s also a great place to perfect your parallel parking.

With the A1 right on your doorstep, and a plethora of winding country roads just around the corner, you’ve got plenty of options if you’re looking for a challenge. But none strikes fear into the hearts of learners quite like the multiple lanes of Queensgate roundabout! Familiarity is key, so with a bit of practice and some help from your Midrive instructor, you’ll be nailing this monstrosity in no time.

Manual and automatic driving lessons

If you’re ready to get out on the road in Peterborough, take your pick from our manual and automatic driving lessons.

Before getting into the driver’s seat, have a think about whether you’d prefer to take manual or automatic lessons. A manual licence will qualify you to drive either type of car, whereas an automatic licence will only qualify you to drive automatic.

If you’re going to be stuck waiting in traffic at the Queensgate roundabout on a regular basis, you might find an automatic car easier to drive as there’s no clutch to deal with. On the other hand, if you’re planning on cruising along the A1 every day then a manual car might give you more control. It’s a difficult choice so take your time to decide!

Driving test centre locations

When the time comes to start thinking about your practical driving test, your Midrive instructor will introduce you to the routes that could come up on the big day. Make sure that you get plenty of practice around your test centre between lessons too, to give yourself the best possible chance of passing first time. Have a look at the DVSA page on driving test centres. Your local test centre is:
