Learning to drive in Bath

Bath is no stranger to traffic jams - this historic city (and UNESCO heritage site) was not built for modern motor vehicles. It contains mainly one-way systems, and a network of bus lanes that can confuse drivers who aren’t familiar with them. But not to worry - your local Midrive instructor will be able to teach you how to expertly navigate the streets of this Roman city.

There are some great places to practise your driving in Bath. The Oval is a quiet residential neighbourhood ideal for practising moving off and stopping, as well as steering. Lower Weston is another of our top locations. It has some inclined roads that are great for getting to grips with hill starts. Or, if you'd like to perfect that parallel parking we'd recommend heading to Perrymead Road, which is also relatively quiet.

Once you feel more confident you can attempt busier areas, like the city centre, and try out a few roundabouts. The Bradford Road Roundabout that links with the A4 and A363 is a particularly tricky one if you’re up for a challenge! We also suggest asking your instructor to give you a motorway driving lesson, as Bath has easy access to the M4. Getting confident in these areas is sure to make you into a safe and confident driver in the long run - not just for your test!

Manual and automatic driving lessons

We get that everyone’s different. That’s why we like to offer you both manual and automatic lessons in Bath.

Before you book your first lesson, make sure you’re happy with the type of transmission you want to learn. Manual cars might take a little longer to get the hang of but there are more instructors available, so you can normally get started quickly. Plus, once you qualify in a manual car, you can have the choice between driving a manual or an automatic! The same isn’t true for automatic, but it does have its own perks.

If you opt for automatic driving lessons, there’s less to get your head around, so you may pass your test quicker. Keep in mind, Bath can get quite busy with its many one-way streets populated by buses and cyclists. An automatic might make it easier to drive around the city centre during rush hour as you wouldn’t have to worry about changing gears constantly.

Whatever you decide is right for you, our instructors are waiting to start you off on the road to passing your driving test!
