Learning to drive in Norwich

Driving lessons in Norwich could take you anywhere: from the city, to the countryside, to the seaside. There's a big variety of roads which can be daunting, but with a top-rated Get Driving instructor at your side, we’re sure you’ll do great!

A good area to start out is around Raymond Road. This quiet, residential street links up with Gowing Road and Meredith Road to make a simple loop. Here you can get familiar with the car, practising moving off, stopping, and signalling. When you’re more practised it makes a great spot to come back to and work on your manoeuvres.

Perhaps the best thing about learning to drive in Norwich is the vast array of country roads. If you take the B1140 out of the city centre you’ll find country roads sprawling in every direction. Make sure you look out for concealed entrances, sudden bends, wildlife, and other vehicles - narrow country roads can throw up all types of hazards. With the Get Driving app you’ll get a GPS map of your lesson route, so no matter what direction you take, you’ll be able to retrace it.

For a greater challenge head into the heart of Norwich. The busy A147 follows the river Wensum and then crosses it to encircle the city centre, including Norwich Castle and Norwich Cathedral. The road changes from a single lane to a dual carriageway, so be alert when you’re driving.

Alternatively, head towards the A47 and find the exit near Broadlands Business Park. Here there are loads of roundabouts to practise on - we counted six between the A1270, the A1042, and Broadland Road. Make sure to keep practising, we’re sure you’ll be passing in no time!

Manual and automatic driving lessons

Whichever style suits you best, we can offer both manual and automatic driving lessons in Norwich.

Before you book any lessons take some time to think about which type of car you’d like to learn in - manual or automatic. Lessons in manual cars can be cheaper, and once you pass you are qualified to drive both manual and automatic vehicles. An automatic licence restricts you to automatic cars, but these can often be easier to learn in, though the lessons can be pricier.

You might want to think about where you plan to drive in Norwich. If you think you’ll be stuck in traffic a lot, an automatic could be better for you, as you won’t have to worry about changing gears. However, you might lose out on the sense of control a manual transmission provides, especially when tackling hills. There are pros and cons to both sides, but it’s your decision to make!
