Booking your practical driving test
Once you have passed the theory test (see theory test help) you are able to book your practical driving test, although you should only do this after consulting with your driving instructor. Your driving instructor will inform you of the approximate waiting time for your local driving test centre and decide a plan of when to book your driving test based on how many lessons he/she thinks you need to get to test standard and how often you will be receiving tuition.
The practical driving test can be booked by yourself online at www.direct.gov.uk/drivingtest or by calling 0300 200 1122. The current test fee for car tests is £62.50 for weekdays and £75.00 for weekday evenings and weekends.
Your driving instructor may also offer to book your driving test for you but for this service they may charge you a small booking fee on top of the test fee.
When booking the test you will need your provisional driving licence number, your theory test certificate number and a credit or debit card. You may also be asked for your instructors “ADI number”, this is a number that all fully qualified professional driving instructors are issued with by the DSA and when booking the driving test is used to avoid your driving instructor being double booked for test appointments.
The driving test
The practical driving test is conducted by the Driving Standards Agency at various sites around the UK. You will use your driving instructor’s car for use on the driving test but you may also be able to use your own car (at your driving instructor’s discretion).
You will need to take both parts of your provisional driving licence and your driving theory test certificate with you to the test centre.
You will arrive approximately ten minutes before your test is due to begin and take a seat in the driving test waiting room. At the appointed time your examiner will call out your name and introduce him/her and ask to see your documents. You will then be asked to sign a declaration to say you are a UK resident and that the car you are using is insured for the purpose of the driving test.
You also have the option for your driving instructor to accompany you on your driving test for moral support, although he/she must not talk or interfere with the test at any time. This has to be your choice and if you would like them to come with you, you must ask the examiner before leaving the test centre.
The test then begins with two of the vehicle check questions (your instructor will brief you on these), once you have answered the questions your examiner will ask you to get yourself comfy in the car and explain that you are now going to begin the driving test part.
You will be out for aproxamatly 35 to 40 minutes in which time you will be tested on all aspects of your driving ability on different road conditions, the test is mainly driving but you will be asked to perform two of the three reversing exercises (Turn in the road, Reverse round a corner and Reverse parking) and maybe the emergency stop exercise. Before performing any of the exercises your examiner will ask you to pull over to the side of the road to explain which he/she would like you to perform.
At the end of your driving test you will arrive back at the driving test centre and your driving examiner will give you the result.
Once passing your driving test you will be issued with a certificate and your examiner will take your provisional licence. Your new full driving licence will arrive in the post in around two weeks time.
You are able to drive any car which is insured for you to drive from the moment you pass the test, although in all cases your instructor will drive you home. We also advise that you give yourself a couple of hours to calm down before driving alone for the first time.
After passing your driving test it is advisable to take the pass plus course. The pass plus course will give you further training helping you to become a better and safer driver giving you tuition on motorways, country lanes, town driving, dual carriageways, all weather and night time driving. Your driving instructor will advise you of his/her prices for this.
