Theory test
For information about taking your practical test, please click here, or find an instructor.
The driving theory test can be booked online at www.direct.gov.uk/drivingtest or by calling 0300 200 1122, when booking you will need your provisional driving licence number and a credit or debit card. The current fee for the driving theory for cars and motorcycles is £31.
The driving theory test consists of two parts, the multiple choice part and the hazard perception test. This test is conducted at various sites around the UK, when attending the driving theory test you must bring with you both parts of your provisional driving licence.
Multiple Choice
The multiple choice part of the test is conducted using a touch screen computer. Before beginning the test for real you will get the option to use the practice session to familiarise yourself with the set up and layout of the theory test questions, once completed the theory test will begin for real.
You will be shown each question with several possible options, you will then select the correct answer using the touch screen (some questions require multiple answers, how many answers are required for each question will be shown to you as each question appears).
You will have 57 minutes to answer 50 multiple choice questions, to pass this part of the test you must obtain a score of at least 43/50. You can move through the questions at your own pace and you can flag questions you are not sure about. At the end of the test you have the option to review these flagged questions and change your answers if you need to but this must be done within the allotted time.
Once you are happy with your answers you will have 3 minutes break before the hazard perception test begins.
Hazard Perception
This part of the test begins with a short tutorial video of how the hazard perception test works.
This is also shown using a computer but you will click the mouse button to respond to the test. You will be shown 14 short clips showing every day road scenes and will have to click the mouse button when you see a hazard approaching on the video. Each clip will have at least one developing hazard but there will be one clip that has two.
The earlier you respond to the developing hazard the higher your score for that clip, the highest mark for each hazard is five. Unlike the multiple choice section you will not be able to go back and review your answers.
You must score a minimum of 44 out of a possible 75 to pass this section.
Completion
Once you have completed both parts of the driving theory test you will be asked to leave the examination room, once you have left you cannot re-enter.
You will then be given your results by a member of staff.
